Inspirations behind Ontodia

One year ago, Sami and I attended NYEBN’s “Find your Next Startup Partner” meetup at the Kaftra Lounge.

We haven’t seen each other in a while, and it was a great way to reconnect.  We always wanted to work together again after shutting down Allkaz back in 2009 and the theme of the meetup was quite appropriate.

After about 30 minutes, we realized that we need not look any further to find “our next startup partner”.  It was us!  We bailed and walked over to my fave spot in Chinatown – Hop Kee, to plot our next entrepreneurial adventure.

The following day, Steve Jobs  passed away.  We’ve always been Apple fanboys way back when it wasn’t cool and we were the only guys in the room with Macs (dual-booting Yellow Dog Linux of course!)  The next few days were filled with coverage of Steve Job’s life and we both viewed his Stanford commencement address repeatedly.  And one passage stuck with us:

Your time is limited, so don’t waste it living someone else’s life. Don’t be trapped by dogma — which is living with the results of other people’s thinking. Don’t let the noise of others’ opinions drown out your own inner voice. And most important, have the courage to follow your heart and intuition. They somehow already know what you truly want to become. Everything else is secondary.

The following week, Tuesday, Oct 11 – NYCBigApps 3.0 was announced.  On Oct 17, I turned in my resignation papers.  On Oct 25, Ontodia LLC was formed.  And the rest, as they say, is history :)

Our story is just beginning though – we still have a long way to go!  But Sami and I are both glad  “we had the courage to follow our heart and intuition”.  And it took the passing of Steve Jobs to push us over the edge.

We’ll never forget Steve.
